What

The Duluth Peace Hero Award is an annual cash prize given in recognition to a local community member who is “making a positive change” right where they live. Nominated by their peers, friends, or family for their effort and their impact, the winner of this award will be chosen by The Waging Peace Project and awarded a cash prize of $1,000.

Who

Nominations are open to anyone and are unlimited. From Teenagers to Elders, we are asking people to recognize someone making a positive change in their family, neighborhood, workspace, or civic life. Could be a postman, a young person in their neighborhood, or an elder who makes your congregation great!

When

Every October 1st we will announce the Peace Hero Award and open online nominations to the community.

On the eve of the November election ( 2025 is Nov 3rd) the winner will be announced at an award ceremony at Lincoln Park Middle School Auditorium in Duluth, at 6pm where everyone who was nominated will be invited and acknowledged.

Why

So many reasons!

  1. Nothing is more powerful than being noticed and acknowledged by the important people in your life.

  2. Anyone can be nominated for the Duluth Peace Hero award, but we are especially excited for the impact this award will have on empowering youth in our community.

By encouraging kids to look for positive things instead of only noticing the negative, we teach them mental resilience. By giving them the power to nominate someone and call out the good, we show them the power of their voice in our community. By helping them put into words the qualities they admire, we help them choose their role models carefully and aspire to become a force for good.

  3. Collectively we will show Duluth what we value: Peace, unity, collaboration, and each other.

You make it all happen!

There is no corporate backing or big organization behind the Peace Hero Awards.

It’s a labor of love. We are volunteering our nights and weekends. Everything you see here is made possible by donated time and money.

Peace is our Purpose, not in our job descriptions.

Let’s give a huge shout-out and thank you to Friends of The Waging Peace Project!

The Duluth Peace Hero Award is honored to be supported and funded by the legacy of The Freda and Leo Pfeffer Peace Award through the Fellowship of Reconciliation, an organization created on the eve of WWI, dedicated to nonviolent social change—one of the few organizations that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr joined in his lifetime.
